Mantis Hexapod, for instance.
The Mantis robot was designed and built by UK
company Micromagic Systems over a period of
four years. The company specialises in hexapod
– six-legged – robots, but standing at 2.8
metres tall, the Mantis is somewhat larger
than their usual products. Indeed, it’s the
largest spider robot in the world.
According to Chief Designer Matt Denton, the
six-legged design means that the machine can
keep at least three legs on the ground at a
time, enabling it to remain stable.
The Mantis can be driven from within the pod
or controlled via wifi remote and can travel
over any terrain. Basically, it’s just what you

Trading in danger by elizabeth moon

In Trading in Danger, Elizabeth Moon
introduces readers to Kylar “Ky” Vatta as she’s
being discharged from the military. Ky,
fortunately, is a member of the Vatta family,
owners of Vatta Transport Ltd a powerful space
trading corporation based on the rich planet
Slotter, so she can fall back on her family’s
company as a means to an end. However, her
heart was in the military and in the first
chapter, Moon’s depiction of the Ky’s
discharge is one of the strongest novel
openings which immediately generates empathy
and sympathy for the protagonist. It may seem
a simple thing and with little introduction to
or knowledge of Ky, but a great sense of
emotional turmoil and shock is conveyed
through what Ky experiences and how she
deals with it through her internal dialogue. I
immediately began rooting for Ky to succeed
and felt that way over the course of the novel.
I think I like the character of Ky Vatta even
more than Moon's more famous character
Paks.
Throughout the remainder of the novel, Ky’s
plight does not get any easier. She is given a
derelict of a ship Glennys Jones to run one last
job/mission, which of course does not turn
into “one last job.” Along the way of this last
job, Ky takes on another job in her name,
rather than in the name of her father’s
company. Ky wants to branch out on her own,
make a name for herself. When her father,
Gerard, set her on the task of “one last job”
for the ship, he suspected she might get
herself some more contracts and go a little
rogue. What he, nor Ky, expected was that the
major communication ansible at the spaceport
would be destroyed, one of those jobs she
takes would lead to a contract with a
Mercenary crew – the Mackensee Military
Assistance Corporation – and that job would
involve holding on to some passengers for a
time. What everybody involved didn’t expect
was that some of those passengers would be
pirates who are connected with messing with
the ansibles, attempt mutiny on Ky’s ship.
Fortunately, Ky’s military training kicks in
which allows her to handle the situation
amazingly well.
I am a fan of Elizabeth Moon ’s writing,
although I’ve only read her fantasy output . Not
surprisingly, her storytelling, writing and hand
at character just as strong when she shifts to
Science Fiction. Like her fantasy, there’s a
strong military flavor to the novel which,
considering her experience as a Marine, is only
natural. In that sense, the novel feels quite
natural and plausible. Overall, I enjoyed the
novel a great deal and plan on reading through
the remaining books in the series sooner
rather than late, which I define as ‘within the
next year.’
There came a point near the end of the novel
when one of the characters – a mentor
character by the name of Quincy Robin – was
giving Ky some advice. Good advice from a
place of love and respect. It was a great scene,
and I came to a realization. This character was/
is a woman whose first name is Quincy and
often is referred to by that first name. From
my experience, and this is probably flavored
by the television show Quincy starring Jack
Klugman, I was both reading this character as
a man and a woman. Maybe a better way to
say that is with gender blinders? All I know is
that I wasn’t placing a value on the character
because of her gender. Multiple times in the
narrative, Moon refers to Quincy as “she” or
“her” but my preconceived notion of the
character as a man because of the name was in
conflict with that. I wasn’t placing a value
judgment on the character of Quincy or her
gender, but it was a conflict (of sorts) in my
own head. As a result, I realized the gender of
the character didn’t factor negatively or
positively into my respect and admiration of
the character, Quincy was simply a well-
wrought character who happened to be a
woman.
This “gender blindness” or “zero value gender
judgment” came at a time when I’d read a few
novels in a row by women and just prior to
Trading in Danger, I read (and enjoyed)
Ascension by Jacqueline Koyanagi. Both novels
feature women protagonists in novels most
often associated with male writers which would
most often feature male protagonists. With
both of these novels and the protagonists, I
felt a connection to their plight, felt invested
in their emotions and rooted for them to
succeed.
I’d like to think I’ve always read gender in
characters this way, not as a value in a positive
or negative, but as an element of the
character. There’s ever more talk, at least in
the twitter circles that I follow, about gender
in genre. So this is just my little two cents on
the subject. At least for now.

The 2000AD sci-fi special

The 2000AD SCI-Fi SPECIAL 2014
Available in the shops from 28th May
“It was one of the staples of hazy childhood
summers, an extra dose of Thrill-power for the
holidays. But now the 2000 AD Sci-Fi Special
is back and with a new mission - to unveil a
new generation of comics creators!” So goes
the promotional hoo-haa that came with my
copy of this blast from my past, a bleedin’
Summer Special, no less.
I have great memories of being a wee man and
my mother buying a few Summer Special’s and
saving them for us to read in the car on the
way to some wretched caravan park or other.
As a kid, it was nice to have an oversize comic,
although as an adult you notice more the large
panels designed to pad out the likes of The
Beano and Dandy specials. 2000AD was,
predictably, different. Not necessarily in a
good way for, like the annuals of the time, the
Summer Special was stuffed with rejected
scripts, reprints and shoddy articles.
It’s 2014 now, and Tharg knows his readers
are mostly grown men and woman who will
not accept rejected scripts and reprints, so in
a bold move the Sci Fi Special has been
rejigged as a platform for new writers and
artists, handling classic 2000AD characters.
What a great idea… in theory.
A Summer Special, like any comic, is only as
good as it’s contents, and this is where the
2014 version falls down like Oscar Pistorius’
defence. First up we have a Judge Dredd tale,
“Jinxed”, which just happens to be from the
first female Dredd writer, namely Emma Beeby.
Let's be honest, though, this fact is pretty
immaterial. Emma has written the lovely
“Survival Geeks” 3riller with Gordon Rennie,
which I really enjoyed, but “Jinxed” is just not
very good. Basically it’s almost a carbon copy
of the old Strontium Dog story “A Sorry Case”,
but it’s Dredd having a ton of bad luck. The
saving grace is the very nice, clear art by Eion
Coveney.
Next up we have Alec Worley, best known for
“Age Of The Wolf” (which I thoroughly enjoyed)
with a Robo-Hunter tale illustrated by
newcomer to 2000AD Mark Simmons. Set in
Sam Slade’s earlier days it has a pop at the
likes of Ikea and design snobs to little effect.
Basically, it’s quite a dull story with a few
good lines and competent art. There’s really
not much else to say, except I wanted better
from Sam’s return.
It wouldn’t be a Sci Fi Special without a Future
Shock, this time by Jody LeHeup, better known
for his editing work with Marvel than as a
writer. Also from the Marvel stable is Artist
Jefte Palo, who has illustrated plenty of
superhero stuff. His unusual, modernist style
works very well with the story, which is a bit
of a tried and tested tale that blows it’s
“surprise” ending to anyone who has ever read
this sort of thing before. Nonetheless, it’s well
written and quirky enough to remain in the
mind after the reading, making it the best one
so far.
Fan favourite Durham Red (A vampiric bounty
hunter) returns next, with a cute one off tale
by relatively new scripter Robert Murphy. He’s
aided and abetted by another new boy Duane
Redhead, a very appropriate name for a
Durham Red artist. The story itself is basic and
pretty entertaining, with Red doing exactly
what regular readers would expect her to, and
Redhead’s art fits the story well, clear and
nicely laid out. It will certainly be interesting
to see what these two can contribute in the
future.
There’s a nice little treat up next as veteran
Future Shock scripter (amongst other things)
Arthur Wyatt gives us a blast from the past
with “Orlok, Agent Of East Meg 1”, which is set
during Dredd’s time as moon marshall for
those that like to know their continuity. Jake
Lynch provides rough but effective black and
white art that gives an appropriately gritty feel
to a tale of espionage and betrayal in Brit Cit.
A good, solid story as expected from Wyatt,
and a good introduction to a new artist.
Finally, it’s time for Rogue Trooper, currently
shining in his own U.S title from IDW. It’s
written by Guy Adams, who entertained
recently with the hilarious if overlong “Ulysses
Sweet”, and for his Rogue debut he’s settled
for a neat one off that provides plenty of
action and jumping about whilst ensuring new
readers aren’t too confused about who this
blue bloke is and why is he talking to his gun.
Art comes from newcomer Darren Douglas,
who has done cover work before but not, I
think, an internal story. In fairness he’s a great
find, and his style is similar to that of Boo
Cook, full of colour and action. Again, the
story is a simple one, but it works well as a
quick read.
Overall, then, this is an okay release. Although
it starts off pretty poorly it certainly gets
better, and if a few of the scripts are found
wanting there’s certainly a great deal of great
art to get your teeth into. Not quite a thrill
power overload.

The Monastery of Tatev - Armenia !!
Tatev Monsatry (Tatev) is a masterpiece of
confluence of ingenious medieval
architecture and fabulous nature of
Armenia. There is no doubt, that Tatev is
one of the most spectacular tourist
attractions on the Planet. Tatev was also
widely regarded as one of the most famous
spiritual and educational centers of the
Middle Ages.
The Monastery of Tatev is
a 9th century Armenian monastery located
on a large basalt plateau near the Tatev
village in Syunik Province in southern
Armenia. It stands on a plateau on the edge
of the deep gorge of the Orotan (Vorotan)
River. It became the bishopric seat of
Syunik and played a significant role in the
history of the region as a centre for
economic, political, spiritual and cultural
activity.
In its day the monastery itself had a
population of 1,000 and owned 680
villages.  A vast wealth. It was a huge
center of learning, art and culture. The
Tondrakians, a medieval Armenian hippie
sect fought the church rule in widespread
revolt, including those in villages belonging
to Tatev, before finally being stamped out.
In 990AD, King Vasak even burned down
Tsuraberd village to end their revolt.
The Sts. Paul and Peter church was built
between 895 and 906. An arched hall was
added adjacent to the southern wall of the
Sts. Paul and Peter in 1043. Soon
afterwards, in 1087, the church of St. Mary
was added along the northern fortifications.
In 1295, the church of St. Gregory, which
had been destroyed during an earthquake,
was replaced with a new one through the
initiative of then Metropolitan Stepanos
Orbelian. In 1787, the mausoleum of St.
Grigor Tatevatsi was built adjacent to the
western wall of the St. Gregory Church and
in the end of 19th century a vestibule and
bellfry were added at the west entrance of
the Sts. Paul and Peter.
The monastery was seriously damaged after
an earthquake in 1931, the dome of the Sts.
Paul and Peter church and the bell tower
were destroyed. In the latter years the Sts.
Paul and Peter church was reconstructed,
but the bell tower remains destroyed up to
today.
Aside from the buildings, the monastery
boasts an upright pendulum, known as the
Gavazan (staff). This column was built in
the tenth century following the completion
of the Sts. Paul and Peter church and has
survived numerous invasions and
earthquakes relatively unscathed.
There is a lot to see at the Tatev Monastery,
from churches to tombs to khachkars (cross
stones) to medieval living quarters.
